Buttons are not designed to cover electrical connections in the wire - they are to act as "rip stops" on parallel constructions or as cover for outer jacket removal for wire breakouts. They have also been used to enclose ferrites that are looped around wires, or as a place to add labeling such as date codes to a cord. With a change of shutoffs, the buttons may be used on multiple wire styles.
