Exposed pin connectors were the medical industry standard due to being cost effective and a good size for the application. The regulatory agencies recognized a need to convert them to a safer connection system for all leadwires, so 2mm and banana plugs on the machine end of a cord were required to be replaced by the DIN style plugs (see
Touchproof Safety Plugs). It was agreed that they could remain on the patient end of the cables, especially for connection to the gel pad electrodes, so they are still in demand today. Available with polarity indicators or thumb rings for easy finger grip, the 2mm versions can be customized with different exposed lengths as well as gold plating. Different dimensions & styles of banana plugs are available even though the number of molds for banana plugs are more limited.
